Dr. John McKelway

Surgeon & Founder of the Board of Health

A Scottish-born surgeon, Dr. McKelway was a titan of public health in Trenton. He founded the Mercer County Medical Society and was instrumental in treating the cholera epidemic of 1835, which led to the creation of Trenton's first Board of Health. A civic leader beyond medicine, he founded the South Trenton Aqueduct Company and served as Trenton’s postmaster under President John Tyler.
